Marta Vieira da Silva is in the news today as she and her teammates from the Los Angeles Sol took their first win over the Washington Freedom, beating them 2-0 on Sunday. Vieira da Silva passed the ball to Camile Abily with three minutes left to play to score the second goal. It was the first Women’s Professional Soccer game, playing in front of their home crowd of 14,832 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
As a biography, Marta Vieira da Silva was born on February 19, 1986 in Dois Riachos, Alagoas, Brazil, so her age is 23. She is 5 feet 4 inches tall.
When Marta was 14 years old, she was discovered by Helena Pacheco, famed Brazilian female soccer coach. She played for Rio club, Vasco da Gama, until the professional team folded in 2001. For one season in 2002, she played for a club in Minas Gerais.
In 2004, she became a part of Umea IK, where the team was in the final of the UEFA Cub, but unfortunately they ended up second. The following year, Umea made it to the final, but Djurgarden beat them 3-1 to take the Cup.
Marta’s 2006 season with Umea once again saw the team lose in the final, when Linkopings FC beat them 3-2. Umea finally got a win in 2007, when Marta scored a hat-trick for the winning goal with three minutes left to play.
In 2007 and 2008, Marta was dubbed the Women’s FIFA World Player of The Year .
In January of 2009, she announced that she was leaving Umea and would play for the Los Angeles Sol.
