Meet Julio Lugo, a Dominican Republic professional baseball player who plays as a shortstop for the Boston Red Sox of the MLB. See photos, video and a biography of Julio Lugo here.
Julio suffered a right knee injury last week and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday.
“I don’t think this is going to be a terribly long procedure, but we just don’t know. That’s why we try to be a little careful,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Sunday morning.
Lugo was expected to miss a month after he got himself injured during a spring training game in Tampa Bay.
As a biography, Julio Lugo was born on November 16, 1975 in Barahona, Dominican Republic so his age is 33. He attended Connors State College in Oklahoma and was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 43rd round of the 1995 Amateur Draft. He was released in 2003 after which he joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Lugo signed a $36 million four-year contract with the Boston Red Sox. He wasn’t consistent in his first year and was moved down the order. In the 2007 season, he improved a lot and was on a 14-week hitting streak, marking his career’s best year.
In his personal life, Julio is married to Mabely Lugo and the couple have a son together. He was involved in a domestic abuse case in April 2003. His wife said in her statement that Julio had hit her on her face and slammed it on the bonnet of a car. Lugo was later cleared of all the charges, after his wife admitted that she had exaggerated the story.
