Golf star Annika Sorenstam has become engaged. Her boyfriend, Mike McGee, asked for her hand in marriage Saturday morning while they were at their Orlando home. Annika told the AP that she was surprised by the question, but is as “happy as I can be”. She made the announcement of the engagement on her website:
I would like to announce some special news! I got engaged this morning to my boyfriend of two years, Mike McGee. We were having a nice morning and he completely caught me off guard with the question. Ironically, it was exactly two years ago that we spent our first weekend together. I am very excited about our future and could not be happier.
A wedding date has not yet been set, and this is the second marriage for Sorenstam. She had filed for divorce from her first husband David Esch in February 2005. She started dating McGee (a former sports agent and son of former PGA pro Jerry McGee) later that summer. Mike relocated to Orlando in December 2006, and serves as managing director for the “Annika” brand.
Annika’s engagement is some happy news for the golfer, as she has been struggling this past year on the LPGA tour. This is her first winless season in over 10 years and also lost her No. 1 ranking to Lorena Ochoa earlier this year. She missed two months in the spring for neck and back injuries.
