His wife, pop star Jewel, had to drop out of the dancing competition because of injuries, but no doubt she will be there in the audience to cheer her hubby on. We will be live blogging the event, so check back here Monday night!
As a biography, Ty Monroe Murray was born on October 11, 1969 in Phoenix, Arizona, so his age is 39. Rodeo is in his genes, as his father Butch was formerly a rodeo hand, and his mother Joy was a rider herself when she was a youngster, riding in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association.
Murray would win his first Buckle at just five years of age, and four years later was the Junior Rodeo Champion, even competing with a broken jaw. For nine consecutive years, he was the Arizona All-Around Junior Rodeo Champion.
In 1987, he won three major titles – All-Around and Bareback in the National High School Rodeo Association and Senior Men’s All-Around in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association. When he turned 18, he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), and won PRCA Overall and Bareback Rookie of the Year accolades in 1988.
At 20 years of age, he was the youngest to ever win the PRCA All-Around World Championship and had the distinction of being the first rider to win the PRCA All-Around and NIRA Men’s title in the same year.
Murray’s season earnings topped $200,000 in 1990, and by the time he was 23, he had become the youngest millionaire in the history of rodeo. He founded the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) in 1992 and currently the organization boasts over 600 members here in the U.S. and overseas, with events telecast on Outdoor Life Network, NBC and Telemundo. Murray won his seventh record-breaking All-Around World Championship title on December 13, 1998 and at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, he was given an engraved buckle by the legendary Larry Mahan, whose record he had set out to beat for most titles. He soon starting riding bulls in the PBR and won the 1999 PBR Finals.
Murray is currently retired from professional competition, and since 2004 has been the President of the PBR. He and his wife, Jewel, live on their sprawling 2,100 private ranch in Stephenville, Texas.
