James Kirkland: Professional American Boxer

March 8, 2009

Meet James Kirkland, an American professional boxer who is the current WBO NABO light middleweight champion. See a video and a biography of James Kirkland here.

Kirkland defeated 24-year old Colombian Joel Julio in only six rounds to extend his record 25-0, 22 KOs. Julio was very accurate in the beginning but then Kirkland took over and he didn’t give his opponent any chance for a comeback.

“My pressure and my jab was the key,” Kirkland said. “I had a lot of stamina that I built up during training camp.”

The HBO’s Boxing After Dark match was held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Kirkland is now hailed as the brightest prospect in the future of the sport.

As a biography, James Kirkland was born on 19 March 1984 in Austin, Texas so his age is 24. He fights in the light middleweight category and is the WBO NABO light middleweight title holder.

Kirkland won the Silver Gloves championship for four consecutive years and was denied the title at National Golden Gloves following a controversial decision against James Patterson. He had a 134-12 record as an amateur. He turned professional in August 2001 and knocked out Maurice Chalmers in his first match.

He defeated Brian Vera in November last year in a technical knockout decision. James has been trained by Ann Wolfe since 2001, who is a former women’s champion.
