Maria Sharapova is set to defend her U.S. Open title next week, and while she’s doing that, she’ll be wearing tennis dresses that are decorated with interpretations of New York’s skyline. The designs are created by Nike senior designer Colleen Sandieson, and they were unveiled earlier today. You can see more photos below.

Just like at last year’s Open, Maria will have one outfit that she specifically wears during the day and another one for matches played at night. The photos of Maria in the red dress is what she will wear at night. The red of course, is in honor of the Big Apple.

“I’ve worn a red top before but never a red dress, but there is no better place to do it than New York,” she told the Associated Press.”

The dress is made of a breathable wicking jersey and was not sewn. The seams were bonded with heat and silicone instead of thread. Adorning the dress are more than 600 Swarovski crystals, which adds just a little bit of oomph (not that Maria needs any oomph, she definitely does that on her own). The back of the dress was not forgotten either. There are three crystal buttons going down the back, which creates a keyhole effect.

Her daytime dress will be similar to the red, but in black and white. This dress will not be adorned with the crystals. See the photo below:

New York Fashion Week coincides with the U.S. Open next week, and Maria hopes to attend at least one show. She’s been to a Marc Jacobs show for the past two years, but hopes to see Michael Kors, Peter Som, and Vera Wang. Once she retires from tennis, the fashion world is something she’d like to be involved with.
