Yossi became an unlikely hero during the recent Liverpool-Real Madrid Champions League match when he diverted a Fabio Aurelio free-kick during the closing minutes to score a winner in the exciting 1-0 Liverpool win. The win will makes club a favourite for a quarterfinal spot and is a major setback for the Spanish champions.
“We needed to work very hard. It’s important not to concede in Europe and I was very pleased with the team-work my players showed,” manager Rafael Benitez told Sky Sports.
As a biography, Yossi Benayoun was born on 5 May 1980 in Dimona so his age is 28. He started his career at the age of 9 with Hapoel Be’er Sheva and was a national star at the age of 13. He moved to Netherlands to play with Ajax Amsterdam and became the highest-scorer and the best player of their youth tam by his 16th birthday.
Yossi was offered a spot on the senior team but he couldn’t settle in Netherlands and returned back to his home country. He then played for Maccabi Haifa and scored in superb victories over European clubs. He was the MVP of the 2000-01 season of Israeli Premier League. He later played for Spanish club Racing Santander and West Ham United, before settling down with Liverpool in 2007. He signed a £5 million four-year deal with the club.
Yossi scored his first goal with the club on 25 September and completed an average first season. He occupied the No.15 shirt, worn by Peter Crouch who left for Portsmouth.
In his international career, he made his debut with the Israeli National Team in 1998 and was made the captain just before the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers.
