Meet Sarah Blewden, a former model turned amateur boxer in Great Britain. See photos, video and a biography of the beautiful blond Olympic hopeful.
Sarah Blewden is in the news today because the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) has seen fit to ban her from competition because of her breast implants. The association claims that her 2003 breast augmentation surgery, which increased her size from 32B to 32C puts her at greater health risk.
“International rules forbid anyone with breast implants continuing to box because of risk of damage to the breast tissue,” said Tony Attwood, chairman of the ABAE.
“The natural breast tissue is pushed forward in front of the implant and it is this that is more at risk. Repeated punches to the breast could also lead to distortion known as capsular contracture, he said.
Blewden disagrees with the assessment, calling it “ridiculous.” She said that her surgeon told her that the breast implants do not make her more vulnerable to injury as the association is claiming. She also added,
“They are not enormous ones – they are in proportion. They are gel implants and not liquid so they won’t burst…Women haven’t been allowed to box for that long and this is an obstacle I want to get over so other women like me won’t have the same problem.”
The ABAE had planned to develop a protective breast plate that would allow women boxers to compete, but research funding has been withdrawn.
Although women’s boxing is not yet an Olympic sport, the Olympic Minister,Tessa Jowell, has said that she wants to open the sport to women in the 2012 London Olympics. She is a strong advocate for women’s equality in sports and has said “it’s high time there was equal opportunity at the Olympics.”
As a biography, Sarah Blewden is 25 years old and lives in Poole, Dorset, England. She is a former professional model who now runs a hair salon. She took up boxing two years ago as a way to stay fit. However upon discovering her natural talent for the sport she began to pursuit the sport with amateur competition and even the 2012 Olympics in mind as goals.
