Meet Alicia Sacramone, a World Champion gymnast and U.S. Olympian. You can see photos, biography, and video of her here!
**UPDATE – 7/20/08 Congratulations to Alicia for being named to the U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics Team. Good Luck in Beijing! She will need it because the Chinese team is surging ahead of Team USA. But just look at how she did.
Alicia Sacramone was born on December 3rd, 1987. She hails from Boston, Massachusetts. It’s been said that she started in gymnastics after she was doing cartwheels in a local shopping mall in Massachusetts. She qualified as an elite gymnast in 2000. She would place 7th in the All Around at the 2002 US Classic and 14th at the Senior Nationals in 2003.
In 2004, she was a member of the team that competed at the Pacific Alliance competition and won the Gold. Unfortunately, Alicia failed to qualify for the Olympics that year, after she had several mishaps at the nationals competition. This didn’t stop Alicia, even after missing the Olympic team, as she trained very hard the summer of 2004 and would go on to the World Cup finals, where she would win the Gold in the Vault Final.
In 2005, she qualified for the finals in Vault and Floor Exercise at the World championships in Melbourne, Australia. She would win the Bronze in the Vault Final, and would win the Gold in the Floor Exercise.
In 2006, she competed in the 2006 World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Unfortunately, she would be disqualified from the floor final after being deducted .5 for a pause in her leap combination. She did win the silver in the Vault final and helped her team win the silver medal.
Alicia is now enrolled at Brown University and is part of the gymnastics team there. She is hoping to be part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team.
