World No.2 Serena Williams defeated Russian Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3 to win the 2009 Australian Open. This is her tenth Grand Slam title and fourth Australian Open crown. With this win Serena now moves to the top of the world rankings, replacing Serbian Jelena Jankovic.
“I’m pretty happy… obviously! It’s been a nice fortnight and I thank my mom to have stayed with me all this while. I also than all the sponsors, the organizers and of course, the crowds. You people have been very supportive and it’s always been a very happy experience playing here.”
Serena looked very happy raising the winner’s trophy, after a very easy match which ended in just 59 minutes. It was by far one of the most one-sided Grand Slam final wins. Safina was helpless against the powerful opponent who shot her way through the first set in just 22 minutes. Safina has now lost two Slam finals, after loosing the last year’s French Open.
Serena also won the doubles title yesterday with sister Venus, beating Ai Sugiyama of Japan and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-3, 6-3. She is now the highest prize money winner in women’s sport with almost $23m in career earnings.
