Spanish player Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Venus Williams 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the biggest upset of the Australian Open this year. Navarro is ranked 46th in the world and her previous best performance has just been reaching the 2008 French Open quarterfinals.
“When you go on court you have got to expect anything,” Venus told the UK Press Association. “I’m not surprised at how well she played. I haven’t quite figured out the areas of my game that went wrong, but I have to credit her.”
Williams was in control of the game in the first set but then her serve got broken several times and Navarro started to take advantage of her every fault. Venus tried to recover in the second set but then lost her own set to loose the last chance to save the game.
This is Navarro’s just the first appearance at the Australian Open.
Earlier, Williams’ sister Serena beat Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-3 7-5 in a sort of a struggling manner. She later certified her performance as a ‘D-minus’ and said that there is a lot of room for improvement.
