Rex Ryan Is New York Jets Head Coach

January 19, 2009

Meet Rex Ryan, former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator who is now the new head coach of the New York Jets. See a video and a biography of Rex Ryan here.

Rex signed a four-year agreement with the Jets ‘about an hour’ after the Steelers’ AFC Championship game win over the Ravens. He has reportedly been offered $11.5m for the deal. He replaces Eric Mangini, who failed in getting a playoff spot for the team which started 8-3 this season.

“Any coach who believes in himself wants the opportunity, and it’s a great franchise,” Ryan told ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols on Sunday night.

As a biography, Rex Ryan was born on December 13, 1962 in Ardmore, Oklahoma so his age is 46. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and later on got his Master’s in Physical Education from Eastern Kentucky. He is the son of former Arizona Cardinals head coach Buddy Ryan, who was also a staff member of the Super Bowl III Championship team.

Ryan had earlier joined the Ravens in 1999. He has been a Defensive Coordinator with team since 2005. His appointment as the Jets’ new head coach has been applauded by the majority.

Baltimore’s famous defensive leader Ray Lewis had this to say about him: “Coaching-wise, Rex is one thing, but as a man, when you try to talk to him, he’s just like a father.”
