WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto successfully defended his title by scoring a unanimous decision against Luis Collazo. He improved his record to 24-0 after the win, getting the scores of 114-113, 114-113, 116-111 from the judges in the bout held in Biloxi, Miss.
“I knew I had to win the last round,” Berto said. “I had to bite down and show everybody I had a beast in me. I had to go get it. It was a close call. He banged it out with me.”
The fight was headed to Collazo’s way until the seventh round. It was then when Berto started showering him with punches on his face. Collazo suffered a deep cut just around his left eye and began to show fatigue. Although, they were very much engaged till the last round, Collazo fell on his knees with 37 seconds remaining.
“We had a hard pace through the whole fight,” Collazo said. “We left it all in the ring in the last round and he pulled out the win.”
Berto successfully defended his title for the second time. He defeated American Steve Forbes last September to save his WBC crown.
