Serbian tennis player Jelena Jankovic has been named as the top seeded female player in the upcoming Australian Open. She is also the current World No.1 in the WTP rankings. She will be contesting for her first Grand Slam title.
“I come from a small country, and one that doesn’t have a tradition of producing tennis players, but now I’m the world No.1. When we had the premiere in Belgrade, all the tickets sold out,” she says talking about a recent documentary made on her, Jelena’s World.
It is interesting that her documentary, which is a collection of her real-life videos and is not completely edited, displaced the latest James Bond movie from the top place in the theaters when it got released in Serbia.
Her top ranking doesn’t signify any big wins or titles, it’s just the sum of her consistent performance during the past two years. She reached the finals of the 2008 US Open, semi-finals of Australian Open and French Open and then won the mixed-doubles title at the Wimbledon Grand Slam with British partner Jamie Murray.
Recently, during the Hong Kong World Team Challenge, she pulled out of the tournament due to flu. It was a major setback for her preparations for Australian Open and Team Europe.
Spanish player Rafael Nadal will be the top seed in the men’s category.
