Former Patriots player David Meggett has been charged for raping a North Charleston woman and burglary. This the second time he’s been charged for sexual assault.
The woman told police she woke up at 1 a.m. Tuesday and found a man she knew as “Mike” sitting on her bed, according to an incident report. The man demanded that she repay $200 she owed him and raped her when she said she didn’t have the money, police said.
Megget has earlier been arrested for the same charges in 2001 when he allegedly raped a South Carolina lady whom he met in a bar. He was given a two-year probation in the case after being convicted of sexual battery in 2006. He was out on a bond, which has now been canceled.
He was denied bond Tuesday night on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree burglary, said Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston police. He was being held Wednesday in the Charleston County jail, and it was unclear if he had an attorney.
Megget played for the Patriots from 1995-97 as a running back. His 1996 season was his personal best and he helped New England gain a spot in the Super Bowl XXXI. He was released of his duties in 1998 after being accused of a sexual assault case in a Toronto hotel.
