Wimbledon champion Venus Williams beat World No.7 Vera Zvonareva 6-2 6-2 in the finals of the World Team Challenge being played in Hong Kong. With this win, Team America beat Team Russia to finish at the top.
“We both wanted it so badly, so it was a very emotional match for both of us,” Williams said. “I think I took the things that I learned from that match (in the WTA Championships) and used it today.
“That helped me a lot.”
Williams was almost ruthless in the match which didn’t seem like any international tournament final. She broke Zvonareva’s service in the first and the third game to help secure a confident win. She has already defeated top-ranked Jelena Jankovic and Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze in the run-up to the final.
In a surprising fashion, Argentina’s Gisela Dulko earlier beat Chakvetadze to give Team America a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
This tournament was the last warm-up event for all the professional players before the Australian Open, which starts on the 19th January.
