Former Major League all star Jose Offerman, who currently plays in the minor leagues for the Long Island Ducks, was suspended today after he went bat crazy on Bridgeport Bluefish pitcher Matt Beech last night. (See photos below) After Offerman was hit by a pitch by Beech, he went after Beech with his bat. Beech broke his middle finger on his right hand. During the melee, Bluefish catcher John Nathans was hit in the head and eventually had to leave the game due to nausea and did collapse in the dugout. Both players were treated at a hospital and later released.
Long Island Ducks owner Frank Boulton spoke about the bat incident:
“I can say that Jose’s conduct in bringing the bat to the mound after being hit was wrong, there is no question about that,” he said. “We’re all saddened by this because Jose has had a 15-year major league career and is a true gentleman.”
Offerman was arrested shortly after being removed from last night’s game. He is charged with two counts of second degree assault. He posted $10,000 bond and is due back in Bridgeport Superior Court on August 23.
