South Africa Wins First Test Series In Australia

December 30, 2008

World No.2 South Africa reminded the World Cup Champions Australia about their clout by beating them on their own ground by nine wickets to seal the Test Series 2-0. Captain Graeme Smith has truly ushered in a new world order after inflicting Australia’s first home loss in almost 16 years and that too, by making a smooth comeback after being down in the first innings.

Australian Captain Ricky Ponting is facing tough times

“It has been an incredible team effort. I have been smiling non-stop since we hit the winning runs.”

“At the MCG, what better place to want to do it,” he said on the Nine Network. “I’ve had some individual highlights here, but lost Test matches and drawn Test matches, so this one takes the cake. Having won a Test match here beats all those (previous) feelings … and is an unbelievable effort.”

In a game of all sorts, South Africa defied the myth of Australian dominance in world cricket in all areas of the game. They chased the target of 183 runs with just one wicket down with Smith leading from the front.

But, it was the performance by fast bowler Dale Steyn which was truly exceptional. He claimed five wickets in each innings to finish the match with figures of 10-154 and was awarded the Man of the Match.

SA won the first test match in Perth by six wickets. Now, if they go on performing like that and beat Australia in the third one at Sydney, they’ll be walking away as World No.1 team. They would also be thanking India who started the downfall of Aussies by beating them in an earlier Test Series.
