Los Angeles Lakers Stop Celtics Run

December 26, 2008

Los Angeles Lakers defeated Boston Celtics 92-83 to end their 19-match unbeaten franchise record streak on the Christmas night. With this win, the Lakers also avenged their NBA Finals defeat last season.

Kobe Bryant top scored for the Lakers with 27 points.

“It was fun just because of the challenge of stopping the streak,” Los Angeles (24-5) forward Kobe Bryant said after the game. “We made the right plays. They were determined not to let me beat them, and Pau (Gasol) did a great job stepping up and hitting big shots,” he said.

Gasol was instrumental in the final minutes of the match when he scored 7 points in just three seconds to ensure the victory.

It was a great moment for Lakers coach Phil Jackson who celebrated his 1000th victory as a NBA coach in almost 17 seasons with Chicago and Los Angeles. He now becomes the fastest coach to do so.

“It’s amazing. I mean, he’s one of the greatest coaches of all time,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “I can guarantee you that I won’t win 1,000 games because I won’t be around that long. It’s just an amazing number. When you throw up 1,000 wins, that says a lot.”

Los Angeles improved to a 15-1 home record with this win.
