Greg Cassel, the father of New England Patriots QB Matt Cassel, died Monday night. Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters Wednesday that Matt had taken a leave from the team and did not know when he was returning. It turns out Cassel joined the team today, so it looks like he may play on Sunday. No definitive word on that as of yet. The Patriots were at San Jose State practicing this week for their game against the Raiders. They did not travel back to Massachusetts after their win over Seattle last Sunday.
As a biography, we have limited information about Greg Cassel. We do know that he was 57 at the time of his death. He reportedly was a Hollywood script writer, and he and Matt’s mother Barbara divorced in 1996. In an interview with the Boston.com, Greg admitted that he put their family in financial stress after “putting all their money” into a movie project that just didn’t take off. Even after the divorce, the older Cassel still had an influence on his children’s lives.
Numerous reports indicate that Cassel died of natural causes.
