Novak Djokovic Wins Tennis Masters Cup

November 16, 2008

World No. 3 Serbian player Novak Djokovic beat Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 7-5 to win the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai today. The win bolsters his attempt to conquer the tennis crown from Rafael Nadal. He also earned US $1.24 million along with a Mercedes R500 and a beautiful glass trophy.

“I’m very, very happy,” said the 21-year-old Djokovic after kissing the court and tossing his racket and shirt into the crowd.

“It’s a great achievement for me. The best eight players playing here says everything about the quality of the event and I would definitely put it on a level with the grand slams.”

Djokovic was the crowd favorite all the time. He hit very powerful shots and left the Russian gasping for breath. The final of a Masters Cup looked like a first round match with the game completing in just two sets. Davydenko looked clueless in front of 21-year old’s blazing winners.

This season will always be remembered as the rise and rise of the Serbian player who won the Australian Open and Masters Cup in Indiana Wells and Rome. He’s just 10-points short of replacing Federer in the second position of the world rankings. It should be noted that he was knocked out of last year’s Masters Cup in the first round only, without even winning a set.

Guess… who was sitting in the prize car which Djokovic drove off leaving the arena? She’s Paraguayan Olympian and model Leryn Franco who he describes as “a Miss Universe of 2006″.
