New York Yankees’ Wilson Betemit traded to the Chicago White Sox! The trade included minor league pitchers Jhonny Nunez and Jeff Marquez for Nick Swisher. Betemit’s 2008 season with the Yankees saw him hit .265 with 13 doubles, 25 RBIs and six home runs. Earnings last season were reportedly $1.165 million.
As a biography, Wilson Betemit (pronunciation: Bay-tah-mee) was born on November 2, 1981 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, so his age is 27. He stands six feet three inches tall.
Betemit attended Juan Bautista Safra High School and graduated in 1996, where he was a member of the baseball team. He was just 14 1/2 years old when he was signed by the Atlanta Braves as a free agent shortstop in July 1996. The Braves were fined $100,000 for signing a minor under 16 years of age. In addition to the fine, the Braves were not allowed to sign or scout players from the Dominican Republic for six months in ’00.
He began playing professionally in 1997 for the Gulf Coast Braves. While playing for the Danville Braves in 1999, he was named Player of the Year of the Rookie League and was an All-Star shortstop in the Appalachian League that same year.
While playing for the Jamestown Jammers in 2000, he was named the Short-Season A Player of the Year as well as All-Star shortstop.
In 2001, he started out with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and halfway through the season moved up to the Greenville Braves. He debuted with the Atlanta Braves on September 18, 2001. He moved to the Richmond Braves in 2002, but spent more time on the DL than playing. He would remain with Richmond in 2003 and 2004.
2005 would be a breakout year for Betemit, mostly at third base for Chipper Jones. Betemit was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2006 for Danys Baez and Willy Aybar. In July 2007, he was traded to the New York Yankees for Scott Proctor.
Betemit, along with Jeffrey Marquez and Jhonny Nunez (minor league pitchers) were traded on November 13, 2008 to the Chicago White Sox for Nick Swisher and Kanekoa Texeira, a minor league pitcher.
