Gilles Simon Is French Tennis Champ

Meet Gilles Simon, a French professional tennis player who is currently ranked World No.9 and is said to be one of the brightest prospect for French tennis. See photos, video and a biography of Gilles here.

Gilles achieved the biggest success of his career by defeating Roger Federer 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the WTA season-ending Shanghai Masters Cup.

“The better you play, the better he plays, he’s quite an unusual player and he makes you work hard and runs very well,” said Federer, who also lost to Simon at the Toronto Masters in July.

This defeat marks the end of the season for Federer, who earlier lost his World No.1 ranking to Spanish player Rafael Nadal.

Gilles Simon Biography

As a biography, Gilles Simon was born on December 27, 1984 in Nice, France so his age is 23. He began his professional career in 2002 with the Futures Tournament and won his first title in Lisbon. His first ATP tour victory came in 2007 Marseille Open.

Simon, who’s second ranked in France after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, has won five ATP titles till now. His biggest victories came in 2008 when he beat Roger Federer in Rogers Cup in Toronto and then Rafael Nadal in Madrid Masters. He is one of the only four men to beat all top 3 ranked players in world. In Grand Slams, his all best performances came in this year only when he reached the third rounds of U.S.Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open.

Gilles also reached the third round of the singles event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ironically, he qualified for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai only when Nadal bowed out due to injury. His win over Federer marks a new milestone in his up and rising career.

His current career record stands at 114–82.
