British professional racing driver Lewis Hamilton has won the Formula One World Championship after finishing on the fifth position in the final Grand Prix in Brazil. Aged 23, he is now the youngest F1 champion in the history of the game.
Shortly after the race an emotional Hamilton told waiting media: “It’s pretty much impossible to put into words how I feel. I’m speechless. It has been such a long journey and I am thrilled to be able to do this for everyone.”
The race, which was full of drama, was won by Ferrari driver and home favorite Felipe Massa. Fernando Alonso of Renault came second and Kimi Raikkonen finished with the third position.
Events unfolded at a very fast pace in the final 30 seconds of the race, when a clear winner Felipe Massa was cruising in the lead and was sure to win the Championship as Lewis was running in the sixth place, after being overtaken by Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel. But the McLaren driver was given a ‘gift’ by Toyota’s Timo Glock who slowed his car, just before the chequered flag, to give him the much-needed push in the positions… as Hamilton finished fifth.
It is interesting, since Brazilian fans were rejoicing on Massa’s victory and the title at the same time Lewis was struggling to get on the fifth place. While it is still not known why the German driver slowed his car ahead of Hamilton, it cost Massa the World Championship by just one point. He finished with 97 points.
Earlier, Felipe started at the pole with Lewis on the fourth place in a race marred by few accidents and frequent rains. The teams were forced to go to the pits to change to wet tires. Otherwise uneventful, Massa held on to his lead to finish a perfect race at the home circuit.
Hamilton is the first British driver to win the F1 title after Damon Hill in 1996. It is also McLaren’s return to the top after almost a decade.
Ferrari won the Constructor’s title with 152 points.
