American sprinter Marion Jones, who won five medals in the 2000 summer Olympic games in Sydney, sat down with Oprah on Wednesday to discuss her steroid use prior to the Olympics. While apologizing for lying, Jones maintained that she never knowingly used banned substances. She said that she made a conscious decision to lie when prosecutors showed her a substance called tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), which was also known as “the clear.” She told Oprah that she believed that all she was taking were legal vitamins and supplements, and thought “the clear” was simply flax seed oil. She told Oprah:
“Never knowingly did I take performance-enhancing drugs.”
She says she regrets lying to prosecutors, which is two of the three charges she pleaded guilty to in 2007. She told Oprah that she regrets not taking a few minutes to think about her decision to lie, as she did recognize the drug “the clear,” but maintains that she did not know it was a performance-enhancing drug. She stated that she wished she had consulted a lawyer before making any decisions to knowingly lie about taking “the clear.” Jones was sentenced to six months in jail for lying to federal prosecutors.
Jones won 5 medals in the 2000 games – three gold and 2 bronze. In doing so, she became the first woman to ever win 5 medals in a single Games. The International Olympic Committee stripped her of these medals in Dec. 2007 due to the steroid controversy. Jones says she replays the races in her mind, and when she does so, she asks herself whether or not she still would have won without the help of performance-enhancing drugs.
“Usually, I answer yes. I still think I would have won.”
In a statement to ESPN.com written by BALCO founder Victor Conte, he rejects the notion that Jones did not know what she was taking when using “the clear.”
“I cannot believe Marion Jones continues to lie. Enough is enough. She knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs and has already been to prison for lying about it in the first place.”
He went on to describe in detail how he taught her how to use a Novopen to inject herself three times a week with the steroids. Jones admitted to feeling good while training and competing leading up to the Olympic games, but attributes that to the excitement of the Games, as well as increased training and other supplements she was taking.
