Stanislas Wawrinka Is Tennis Champ

Meet Stanislas Wawrinka, a Swiss professional tennis player who has risen quite exponentially in the world tennis horizon and has become the next best Swiss singles player after Roger Federer. See photos, video and a biography of Stanislas here.


Stanislas has confirmed his participation for the Chennai Open 2009. Currently ranked No.12 in the world, he is sure to be one of the favorites to win the tier-2 event.

“This will be my first visit to India and I am anxiously looking forward to playing at the Chennai Open. I hope to give a good and consistent performance here.”

Wawrinka will also be playing the Davis Cup for Switzerland against U.S. in March and will help to take some load away from Federer.

Stanislas Wawrinka Biography

As a biography, Stanislas Wawrinka was born on March 28, 1985 in Lausanne so his age is 23. He started playing international tennis from the age of just 14. He won the 2003 French Open junior championships and was ranked 14th amongst juniors.

Stanislas turned professional in 2002 and was just outside 50 in the world rankings by 2005. In the Grand Slams, his best performances have been reaching the fourth rounds of Wimbledon and U.S. Open. He was also the runner-up of the 2007 Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

Wawrinka teamed up with Roger Federer to win the doubles gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They defeated Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden in the finals.

His career ranking has been as high as 9th in June this year, after he won Master’s Series event in Rome and his career record stands at 105–91.
