Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin has flown to Russia to be with his sick grandfather. This will cause him to miss the Caps game against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. Coach Bruce Boudreau said:

“He had to go and he wanted to be near (his grandfather), but if you know Alex, he doesn’t want to leave his teammates. So that’s always a struggle, but in the end, he knows what he needs to do – and that’s family first.”

Washington is unsure when Ovechkin will return to the team, but state they will know more later in the week. It is possible that he could miss this Saturday’s game against the Sabres as well.

Despite being the reigning league MVP and winner of the Lester B. Pearson Award for the most outstanding player, as well as the winner of the Art Ross trophy for most points scored and Rocket Richard trophy for most goals, Ovechkin has not scored a goal in the last six games. Undoubtedly, he has been concerned about his dying grandfather, which spurred his decision to fly home to be with him and other family members.
