New San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary loses his debut game and sends Vernon Davis to the locker room. See the video of Mike Singletary’s press conference comments below.
After taking over for the floundering San Francisco 49ers last week, Mike Singletary lost his debut game 34-13 to the Seattle Seahawks. During the game, Singletary became upset with tight end Vernon Davis after he was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter. After the play, Davis, who disputed the flag, attempted to avoid contact with Singletary while walking to the sideline. Singletary found him, however, and “gave him an earful” before he sat on the bench. Singletary was so upset that he returned to the bench to continue yelling at Davis two more times. Singletary then sent Davis into the locker room.
“I’d rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we have to do something else rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team. It is more about them than it is about the team. Cannot play with them, cannot win with them, cannot coach with them. Can’t do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win.”
In response, Davis said:
“Coach Singletary told me to go sit down, and after a while, he told me to just take a shower and take it in. He’s a good coach. Coach Singletary is an emotional guy, just like myself. He wants to win, and I did exactly what he told me to do.”
This is not the first time Vernon Davis has been benched by his coach. Earlier this season, former 49ers coach Mike Nolan pulled Davis out of a game, although stopped short of sending him to the locker room.
