Venus Williams defeated Pennetta 7-6 (1), 6-2 to win the Zurich Open. Venus last won this tournament in 1999. This is her second win this season. She also took the Wimbledon title this summer.

17th-ranked Pennetta entered the tournament with a 3-1 lifetime record against Venus, and had defeated her just last week in Moscow. She was trying to become the third player to beat Venus in a fourth-straight match. The only other players to accomplish this are her sister Serena Williams, and Lindsay Davenport. After the match, Pennetta said of Venus:

“She just played unbelievable today. It is tough to play against someone who serves like she did today. I didn’t have any chance to make any breaks.”

On her win, Venus said:

“It is great to come here and play my best tennis of the week in the final against someone who is playing as well as she is,”

Venus is currently ranked 8 with the WTA. She has played in 10 tournaments in 2008, and has 28-8 record. In her lifetime, she has won 38 singles titles, with a 510-121 win-loss record, and 11 doubles titles, with a 107-20 win-loss record. She has also won three Olympic gold medals.

Venus Williams was born in Lynwood, Ca, on June 17, 1980, and she currently lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. She has been playing pro tennis since Oct. 31, 1994. Tennis has netted her $20,581,346 in prize money over her career. (WOW!)
