Shane Mosley Beats Ricardo Mayorga

September 27, 2008

American boxer Shane Mosely knocked out Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga in the twelfth round of their junior middleweight bout on the Saturday night with just one second to go. Mosely floored Mayorga almost twice in the final round of the non-title fight which effectively puts him in the position to have a shot at the title.

“I closed the show,” Mosley said of the fight between two former world champions. “I got the knockout.”

“I could feel him getting weaker. He was trying to play like he was strong. He might have stole some rounds here and there but I wanted to go for the knockout.”

Mosely’s record has now improved to 45-5, with 39 knockouts. He made a comeback after almost a year, fighting Miguel Cotto in the last November and dropping the unanimous decision.

He initially had trouble adjusting to the fighting style used by the Nicaraguan, but then took over completely by the seventh round and landed punches at will, like on a stationery target. While Mosely came from a lost last fight, Mayorga had won his last fight beating Fernando Vargas in a 12-round decision.

Speaking through a translator, Mayorga said: “I was proud of the way Shane came to fight. He didn’t run. I thought I was doing well, and I came out to win the 12th. But he caught me. I will tell you one thing — he hit harder than I thought he would.”

Meanwhile, in the WBC welterweight title, Andre Berto defeated Steve Forbes with scores of 118-109 and 116-111 on two cards.
