Meet Alexandra Kosteniuk, a Russian chess grandmaster who has won the 2008 World Women’s Championship title here in Nalchik, Russia. See photos, video and a biography of Alexandra Kosteniuk here.
Kosteniuk drew in the fourth game of the finals with Yifan Hao of China to win the coveted diamond studded crown and a prize money of $60,000. She also became the first Russian to win the title in almost 44 years after Elisabeth Bykova held it from 1958 to 1962.
As a biography, Alexandra Kosteniuk was born on April 23, 1984 in Perm, Volga Federal District so her age is 24. Besides being the current chess champion, she also has an Elo rating of 2510 which gives her a position of 10 on the FIDE’s July rankings.
Alexandra has been in the finals of 2001 Championships also at the age of just 17 but she lost out on that occasion. She was the European champion in 2004 and the Chess960 (Fischer Random) world champion in 2006 which she defended this year also. Kosteniuk also won the 2005 Russian Women’s Championship which were held in Samara.
Besides chess, Alexandra also hosts a popular podcast Chess is Cool, which keeps it’s listeners up to date with all the chess events. In her personal life, she is married to Diego Garces of Switzerland. The couple has a daughter.
