Christy Martin Is A Champion Boxer

September 17, 2008

Meet Christy Martin, an American female boxer who is said to be one of the greatest to play the sport in the history and holds the most impressive career record of all time. See photos, video and a biography of Christy Martin here.

Christy Martin helped female boxing get a lot of exposure through her undercard fixtures with the help of promoter Don King. Her matches attracted millions of people and media was just mad about her.

As a biography, Christy Martin was born on June 12, 1968 in Bluefield, West Virginia so her age is 40. She was known as the The Coal Miner’s Daughter, after her father John. Few people know that Cristy got admission in Concord University in Athens, WV on a basketball scholarship.

It was only when she won a ‘Tough Woman‘ contest that she was inspired to box. She started her professional career at the age of 21 and her match was a draw with Andrea Buchanan. After that, Cristy won nineteen matches in a row and her first world title came in 1993 when she knocked down Beverly Szymansky in only the third round.

Later on, Cristy defended her title almost seven times but her moment in the limelight came when she fought with Deirdre Gogarty in 1996 in front of cameras and the program was called ShowTime. She won the fight and earned a Sports Illustrated cover for that.

Her other famous fights include those with Mia St. John on December 7, 2002, Laila Ali on August 23, 2003 and Holly Holm on September 16, 2005. While she knocked Mia down in the first one, Cristy lost the other two by widest of margins.

She currently holds a career record of 46-4-31KO and has been inducted in the International Boxing Hall Of Fame.
